What I’d like for Nurses Week next year, part 2

2. Enough well-looked-after support staff. Too often, the people who clean the rooms or transport the patients or fix the broken lights are ignored. They already don’t get paid enough and have backbreaking work to do; ignoring them not only adds insult to injury, but makes safe and effective patient care that much harder. They’re also the first people to be laid off in tough economic times, which means that I end up getting paid hinty-bazillion dollars to clean a room or fix a broken door in my unit. That’s a silly waste of time and resources.
