5 books to help you escape from nursing

When I’m not at work, I’m usually reading, thinking about reading, picking cat hair off the book I want to read or browsing in a bookstore. I don’t read about nursing—unless it’s Cherry Ames—because I’m a big believer in getting away from what I do or write about for a living.
Right now I’m revisiting some old favorites: travelogues and books on cooking, with a couple of mysteries thrown in.

1. First on my recommended reading list is In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. It’s about Australia (those of you from Oz already recognized that)—but that doesn’t go nearly far enough. Bryson covers everything from how easy it is to forget who the prime minister of Australia is at any given time to exactly why Australian bacon is so much better than bacon you’d get in the U.S. or U.K. He explores parks and wild areas all over the continent, has a run-in with an echidna, barely avoids an encounter with jellyfish and gets badly sunburned. I started laughing on the first page and occasionally had to put the book down so that I could laugh harder. Don’t read this with anybody else in the room; you’ll find yourself reading passages aloud and annoying them.
