Ellis Angels: The Nurses of Ellis Island Hospital
The cover text is a little hard to read because of the window panes, but otherwise, this is a very nice effort. The ghostly superimposition of the view from Ellis Island Hospital with the face of a young nurse makes us pause and wonder what life must have been like in the nursing profession almost 100 years ago. There’s a hint of romance set against the hard realities of one of the world’s most demanding professions.

Ellis Island Hospital has been closed since 1954. When Superstorm Sandy bombarded New York Harbor in 2012, Ellis Island was left battered and flooded. During an extensive cleanup, a file cabinet was discovered in the long-abandoned, vacant hospital building. It was found to contain the files of a former senior nursing superintendent. Filled with documentation of nursing procedures, notes, schedules and pages from her 1924 journal, the tender tale of Ellis Angels was inspired from these rescued files.”
