Wyoming receives major grant to address nursing shortage

The Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing and the Wyoming Center for Nursing and Health Care Partnerships (WCNHCP) has received a $280,000 grant from the Wyoming Workforce Development Council and Department of Workforce Services Industry Partnership Solutions to address the state’s nursing shortage.
While most of the country is experiencing a nursing shortage, Wyoming has been hit particularly hard.  RNs are currently the second most in-demand jobs in Wyoming, with nurse vacancies predicted to continue upwards of 19% through 2010.  The state anticipates a need for 3,300 more registered nurses by 2014 – an increase of almost 104% over 2006 numbers.  Without intervention, some experts foresee a shortfall of 63% by 2020.

The grant is designed to halt the negative progression.  Project leaders Mary Burman, dean of the nursing school, and Matt Sholty, of WCNHCP, plan to increase the state’s capacity to educate nurses.  They plan to explore creative ways to expand nursing education while attracting youth, minorities and men to nursing.
