We Need To Start Taking Care Of Ourselves

0

Whether it calls for more exercising or a better effort with eating right, we as nurses have to live a healthier lifestyle. We cannot be telling our patients what they should or shouldn’t eat, while we ourselves eat a couple of crackers for lunch and that’s it. I actually have been living a healthier lifestyle while in nursing school, working as a Nursing Technician and now as an RN. Not only could it affect me, but it can also lead to me hurting my patients by committing a medication error, or missing something on my assessment of a patient or incorrect documentation due to a lack of nutrition. The list goes on and on when you are lethargic, forgetful, or just lazy due to a lack of food/nutrients.

My nursing school, fortunately, was big on time management, when it came to patients as well as when it came to us as the RNs. We must be able to take care of ourselves before we can take care of others, and stay at our best to provide optimal and efficient care to our patients. Luckily for me, I am surrounded by many individuals who devote a portion of their day to making sure they are eating right and that their body is working to the best of its ability. Some are nurses, others are firefighters, police officers, and PTs. They know how crazy a work schedule can be, especially when it gets hectic on the job. I have been an avid gym junkie ever since my early high school years. Luckily, my mother was really into the healthy living/eating frenzy that has burst into a worldwide phenomenon as of the past couple of years.
