7. New nurses struggle to find jobs. Is there a nursing shortage or isn’t there? We hear about it nonstop: There aren’t enough nurses. But we’re also hearing something else from new graduate nurses and nurses trying to re-enter the field: There aren’t any jobs. So, which is correct? From what it sounds like, it varies across the country. In places where there are no jobs, the schools are still processing thousands of new nurses—and disappointing many of them when they can’t find work.

Scrubs reader comment: “What I believe is a disservice that nursing schools have done (or not done…) is failing to help their students find and land those jobs. Perhaps things would be easier if all schools were associated better with different hospitals…‘cuz one thing’s for sure, my nursing school really did not help at all!”

8. Discrimination or smart? Hospital won’t hire smokers. Smokers see it as discrimination, nonsmokers see it as a smart move. After all, nurses and other healthcare workers are supposed to be promoting health, and if there ever was an activity attached to the image of being unhealthy, it’s smoking.

Scrubs reader comment: “Last time I checked, Tennessee was still part of the US of A. What a complete act of discrimination and rights violations! Are they going to see if you eat at a fast-food restaurant and not hire you if you do? Sad, very very sad.”
