The secret to landing a more desirable job

Have you been giving a lot of thought to moving on from your current gig, but aren’t sure where to start to search for something new? Alicia-joy at Transitions in Nursing recently wrote up an excellent post about landing a more desirable job. Right off the bat, she tells us that 70 percent of new jobs are never even advertised! That tip is a major clue into how hard it is to land your dream job and what unique methods you may need to take in order to secure it.

Here are some of her tips:

  • Build a strong “power base” of influential people in your network. This is something I coach on extensively. When you understand how to build and maintain a power base, you will never want for a job again. You’ll know how to get and stay connected with people who you can help and who can help you with connections and resources whenever you need them.
  • Don’t be afraid to send your resume and cover letter to recruiters and hiring managers explaining what you are qualified for and what you are looking for.
  • Talk about yourself. I’m not talking about bragging, but people aren’t mind readers! Let people in your network (friends/family/co-workers/affiliates/acquaintances/past managers who you have strong relationships with) know what you are currently doing and what you are looking for.
  • Join industry organizations/associations that you’re interested in. Be active in these organizations and be a strong contributor. People will notice.

Want to hear the rest? Head over to her site for the full post. Then tell us in the comments: What successful ways have you approached finding a new job?
