The one thing nurses shouldn’t put off

4. Make one modification to your physical environment.
Again, consider your personal health obstacles. If you have chronic or recurring lower back pain, shoulder pain or neck pain and you sit at a desk all day, maybe it’s time to have an assessment of your work space by an ergonomics professional. Or maybe you’re sleeping on a mattress that’s 10 or more years old. (The general rule of thumb is that your mattress should be replaced about every seven years.) Perhaps you’re having a lot of sinus problems and your furnace and air ducts haven’t been cleaned in many years. And maybe those old carpets need to be tossed out and replaced with a type of flooring that’s easier to keep clean and dust-free. It’s time!

If there’s something in your physical environment that you know or strongly suspect is contributing to you feeling unwell, and you’ve been putting off doing something about it, make a plan—go shopping, schedule an appointment with a tradesperson who can do something about it.

At the end of 2012, assess if and how your health plan has worked for you, and modify it as necessary for 2013.

Cynthia Dusseault is a professional freelance writer with both a health and an education background. A former medical radiation technologist and elementary school teacher, she realized that no matter what she did, she was drawn to any task that involved writing, so she decided, over a decade ago, to write full-time. Since then, she has written for a variety of magazines and websites including Nursing PRN, National Review of Medicine, University Affairs, Your Health, Education Leaders Today, Today's Parent, Children's Playmate, WeightWatchers.ca and many more. She has written about topics such as asthma, genital herpes, circumcision, teleradiology, body art, learning disabilities and exercise trends, and she absolutely adores the fact that writing—particularly doing the research for the articles she writes—makes her a lifelong learner.
