Every week we’re highlighting more great workplaces based on rankings from our Nurse’s Guide to Hospitals. We’ve been making our way around specific regions of the country, and this week we’re looking at the great state of Texas, which has so many highly rated workplaces that it gets a list all to itself!
Quite a few large healthcare networks operate facilities in Texas, and many provide more perks for nurses–such as tuition assistance and educational programs–than some smaller workplaces. Additionally, the state is so large that you can find nearly any environment to work in, whether you desire a rural setting or a more urban or suburban setting in one of the state’s large metro areas.

1. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital
Sugar Land, Texas
As the fifth largest metro area in the U.S., the Houston area has tons of options for nurses looking for work. In the Houston suburb of Sugar Land is Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, which serves as a suburban extension of the better known Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Methodist Health offers many opportunities for students and new nurses, including a student nurse practitioner program and a graduate nurse/nurse residency program. In addition to offering tuition reimbursement for nurses, the system also offers scholarships for the children of employees.
2. Texas Children’s Hospital
Houston
Texas Children’s Hospital is located in the same campus as the Texas Medical Center, near the middle of the city. It’s a teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine, which is also located in Houston.
The facility offers continued learning for all nurses through a program it calls the Texas Children’s Learning Academy. Clinical staff participates in a Family-Centered Care program as well as a Pride in Performance course.
3. Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital
Arlington, Texas
Arlington has a population of about 375,000, but it is also part of the metro area known as the Metroplex, which also includes Dallas and Fort Worth. The entire Metroplex has a total population of around 6.5 million residents.
Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital is part of the Texas Health network, which includes about 25 hospitals in the area. Nurses working at the hospital can participate in the Nursing Career Advancement Program, which allows nurses to continue working while gaining advanced degrees and certifications.
4. Covenant Hospital-Levelland
Levelland, Texas
Far from the bustling metropolises of Houston and Arlington-Fort Worth-Dallas is Levelland, a small town of under 15,000, located near the New Mexico border and about 30 miles west of Lubbock, Texas.
The Covenant system was named one of the Best Places to Work by Modern Healthcare, and was named a Best-in-Class employer by Avatar. Though the community is small, nurses still enjoy full benefits as well as tuition reimbursement and education assistance through the Covenant system.
5. Baylor All Saints Medical Center
Fort Worth, Texas
Back to a bigger city, Baylor All Saints has been serving the Fort Worth community for more than 100 years. The hospital was ranked one of the best large community hospitals by Thomson Reuters in 2011.
Nurses have more than 30 nursing specialties to choose from at Baylor, which uses a shared leadership model. The hospital employs its unique ASPIRE Program to reward RNs who continue their professional growth with monetary bonuses.
