The list: 5 “big city” workplaces nurses love

1. Baptist Hospital of Miami

Baptist Hospital is the largest facility of the Baptist Health South Florida Network and sits on a campus that also includes Baptist Children’s Hospital, Baptist Cardiovascular & Vascular Institute, Baptist Health Neuroscience Center and Baptist Center for Spine Care. That campus, featuring Italian Renaissance architecture surrounded by palm trees, provides one of the most unique hospital settings in the country.

Baptist Hospital is Magnet recognized through 2015 and is a DAISY Award participant as well. The system also was named one of our 30 great places to work in healthcare.

Of course, what nurses already working at the facility say about it is as important to anyone considering working in the hospital, and ratings have been high for categories across the board, including good nurse-to-patient ratios and exceptional new grad programs.

2. Methodist Hospital – Houston

The Methodist Hospital, flagship of Texas’ Methodist Hospital System, consistently ranks as one of the best hospitals in the country according to U.S. News & World Report. It currently is ranked as the number one hospital in Texas and also ranks nationally for 13 out of 16 specialties The Guide evaluates. This hospital is also Magnet recognized and a  DAISY Award participant.

Patient satisfaction is rated well above the national average for the hospital, and it seems nurse satisfaction is, too. In addition to rating the hospital (and all others in the system) with high scores concerning the application process, nurses also report the hospital is a great place to work.

3. Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles has been ranked in the top five U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of children’s hospitals around the nation every year since the list was first published in 2009. The facility also ranked in the top 10 of every pediatric specialty every year.

The Magnet recognized hospital sees 97,000 children a year and is a DAISY Award participant. The hospital also has consistently been named a Top Children’s Hospital by The Leapfrog Group.

For nurses, the hospital offers education programs including tuition assistance and education allowance, as well as childcare and other benefits.

4. Children’s Hospital – Minneapolis

With two campuses, in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Children’s Hospital Minneapolis provides care for more than 12,000 inpatient visits every year, as well as more than 200,000 emergency room and other outpatient visits.

In addition to being Magnet recognized and a DAISY Award participant, the facility has also been named a Top Children’s Hospital by the Leapfrog Group.

The hospital offers a list of work/life initiatives for nurses and other employees, including tuition reimbursement, emergency loans and adoption reimbursement.

5. Rex Healthcare – Raleigh, North Carolina

Rex Healthcare is part of the University of North Carolina Health Care system, which is associated with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

The hospital has 660 beds and treats almost 34,000 inpatients per year. Total employment is 5,400, and the facility has been named one of the 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine three times.
