Nurses at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California are manning a new hotline to provide care around the clock. For patients who underestimate as well as for patients who overestimate their symptoms, the nurses on the other end of the Consult-A-Nurse hotline provide free advice ranging from whether a patient should go to the emergency room to suggesting over-the-counter drugs.
Among other benefits, this new program is meant to alleviate the influx of calls to the ER regarding swine flu and to help take pressure off of doctors who receive non-urgent middle-of-the-night calls.
