Show Support For Patients With An Uncomfortable Condition: Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis Treatment Options

While there is no cure for gastroparesis, there are many treatment options available. Depending on the individual patient’s symptoms and needs, they may be given one or a combination of treatments. Some of the more popular treatment options include:

  • Lifestyle and Dietary Changes
  • Medications
  • Procedures and Surgery, including Enteral Nutrition, Parenteral Nutrition, and Gastric Electrical Stimulation

A combination of lifestyle and dietary changes are prescribed to patients with less severe symptoms that just come and go. Those experiencing moderate to severe symptoms are often prescribed a combination of medications to treat things like vomiting and nausea. Surgeries are viewed as a last resort and reserved for patients who don’t respond to other treatment options.

Overall, the goal of these treatment plans is to get any symptoms under control so patients can have an improved quality of life. Additionally, many of the treatment options help minimize unpleasant side effects of the condition, including:

  • Dehydration
  • Persistent Vomiting
  • Bezoars, or Solid Collections of Fiber or Food in the Digestive Tract
  • Malnutrition
  • And More

That’s a Wrap

While gastroparesis is an unpleasant condition for anyone to live with, special events like Gastroparesis Awareness Month strive to increase awareness and support throughout the community aimed at alleviating the suffering of gastroparesis patients. What do you think? Is your office participating in any special events during Gastroparesis Awareness Month?
