Sex and nursing don’t mix — right?
Believe it or not, the issue is currently under debate in Europe. In England, nurse Sara Dale was recently fired for having affairs with the widowers of former patients. In both instances, Dale cared for the women — and potentially met her partners — while the women were dying.Â
The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s code of conduct states the nurses must act with integrity and maintain professional boundaries, including “establishing and actively maintaining clear sexual boundaries at all time with people in your care, their families and careers.” Dale denies any improprieties.
Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, a nursing union recently launched a national campaign against demands for sexual services. The campaign, “I Draw The Line Here,” is in response to reports that some patients are expecting sexual services as part of their care.
