Nurses Are Monumental

Veteran’s Day isn’t just about soldiers: It honors all who serve, including army, navy and air force nurses. There’s no better place to celebrate them than Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial park has two tributes to nurses, the Nurses Memorial and the Spanish-American War Nurses Monument.

Check out more details about the monuments here.

It’s Raining Men

According to the latest census, the number of male RNs tripled from 1970 to 2011. Male practical and licensed vocational nurses doubled.

Dazzle Your Patients

As she was leaving home one day, Jennifer Namazy’s young daughter gave her a good luck charm—her glitter ring. Not wanting to lose it, Namazy, a San Diego physician, attached it to her trusty Littmann and proceeded to see patients at a pediatric clinic. Kids were charmed by the sparkle effect, and Namazy thought other stethoscope-toting practitioners would be, too. She partnered with a local artist to launch CharMED, a line of clip-on stethoscope bling made from antimicrobial metal. The price ranges from $10 for a single charm to $20 for a limited-edition pair. Mobilizing Health Workers

“Motorcycles can save lives.” Now that’s not a sentiment you hear often, but Riders for Health is proving it’s true. Founded by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts, Riders provides and manages motorcycles and similar “off-road” vehicles, allowing nurses and other healthcare workers to reach patients in rural sub-Saharan Africa. That includes teaching them how to ride and maintain their Yamahas and Hondas. “There isn’t a lack of aid to Africa, but it ends up wasted if health workers can’t get vaccines, mosquito nets and care to people in remote areas,” says Riders outreach coordinator Jake Fuchs.
