Six years ago, when Sue Ann Molina started her job in the high-tech, high-tension telemetry unit, she realized she needed a way to decompress in her off hours. Her solution was sweet inspiration: baking cupcakes.Molina, who works nights at Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center in Riverside, Calif., had no trouble finding taste testers for her creations. Her coworkers on the unit were more than happy to sample the goodies. Soon, word of mouth about the delectable treats spread throughout the hospital. With that validation, Molina entered three cupcake competitions, winning awards in each for her signature Ube-Macapuno Cupcake (a Filipino purple yam cupcake topped with coconut cream cheese frosting). Her tension-relieving hobby has become a side business—Oh Sue Sweet—and Molina takes special orders for her confections. “I love to see the expressions of joy when people bite into my cupcakes,” says Molina. The only thing more rewarding? “Taking care of patients.”
