Recession keeps shortage in the shadows

The recession has presented a peculiar silver lining for the healthcare industry by slowing retirement plans for a generation of nurses. Their departure from the profession could further deepen the industry’s chronic nursing shortage. (Miami Herald)

Now that there’s talk of an economic recovery, does this mean the shortage is closer than we think?  And by shortage, we mean…jobs…??

The demand among potential nursing school students is still outpacing the supply of spots available at nursing school programs throughout the country.  And current nursing school grads are eagerly trying to land their first jobs.  In this climate, it seems a ‘shortage’ never sounded so good as students and new grads are banking on this silver lining to gradually fade away.
