Winning a scholarship? We’re guessing it’s something nursing students everywhere dream about (nursing school certainly doesn’t come cheap!). But winning a scholarship AND being entered in the Congressional Record for that achievement? That’s an even bigger, wilder dream…and one that’s now a reality for Theresa Jepsen!
Every year, Cherokee Uniforms holds a scholarship program based on the inspiring film Cherokee produced and distributed called “A Nurse I Am.” Entrants are asked to write an essay in response to the movie, and the 10 winners each receive a $2000 scholarship to put toward their nursing education. Jepsen, a student at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz., was one of the 2013 scholarship winners (Psst! Read her winning essay here).
Shortly after the winners were announced, Cherokee Uniforms received this touching letter from Arizona’s District 9 Congresswoman, Kyrsten Sinema:
I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to [Cherokee] for your sponsorship of the Cherokee A Nurse I Am scholarship, awarded this year to Mesa Community College student Theresa Jepsen, whom I represent in Congress. I intend to enter Ms. Jepsen’s reception of her award, her record of achievement, and Cherokee’s role in that success into the Congressional Record.
