By A nurse was gambling at a local casino and lottery shop when a group of armed burglars stormed in and tried to rob the place. The scene ended with a deadly shooting, but the nurse used the crime scene to stage her own robbery, according to police. She was arrested earlier this week and charged with theft and tampering with evidence.
Witness to a Crime
Lakiesha Deshawn McGhee, 43, a licensed practical nurse from Bonaire, Georgia, was visiting a J&J Dollar Store that’s been converted into a Knodishall Gift Shop on January 18. Customers can play video poker and buy lottery tickets. The authorities said she dialed 9-1-1 in the early hours of the morning after one of the gunmen shot and killed the clerk, Sabrina Renee Dollar, 43.
The entire scene was recorded on camera. McGhee was in the store when the bandits arrived. She can be seen playing video poker holding a handful of cash when the robbers came in wearing face masks, hoods, and dark clothing. One of the gunmen saw the money and came over to her carrying a plastic bag. McGhee put the money in the bag as she was told.
A couple seconds later, another gunman can be seen firing at the cashier, killing the clerk.
“However, evidence was discovered that showed (McGhee) removing lottery tickets from the office where the victim was found,” Houston Sheriff’s Capt. Jon Holland added. “Also, McGhee disconnected the power to the building security system for a brief period before law enforcement and other first responders arrived.”
It’s not clear how much the lottery tickets were worth. Holland added that McGhee appeared to stop and check on the cashier before making off with the tickets. The nurse examined her wounds and then left the store just before the police arrived.
The culprits of the robbery are still at large. The police have released video footage of the robbery to the public to see if anyone can identify them.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the robbers. Anyone with relevant information is urged to call the 24-hour Macon Regional Crimestoppers line at 478-742-2330.
Holland doesn’t believe that McGhee was involved in the shooting.
She remains behind bars in a Houston County jail. No bail has been set. It’s unclear if she has a lawyer to speak on her behalf.
