Never Served on a Board Before? A Free Webinar to Get Your Foot in the Door

The Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) wants to see 10,000 board seats occupied by nurses in 2020. But they realize that not every nurse who wants to serve in a board is ready.

That’s why we’re excited about this opportunity from the American Nurses Foundation: a free webinar series designed to help you prepare to apply for and serve on boards, commissions, and panels. Facilitated by top nurse leaders, the Nurses on Boards series includes these five short webinars (Total time: 2 hours, 50 minutes):

“Nurses on Boards, Advancing Nursing Excellence,” facilitated by Sharon Pappas, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, FAAN and Tim Porter-O’Grady, DM, EdD, APRN, FAAN, is a conversation about bringing nursing excellence and expertise to the boardroom, and the impact it can make on both the organization and the community it serves.

“Building a Board-Ready Resume,” originally a part of the 2016 ANCC Magnet Conference, walks you through the process of transforming a 10+ page curriculum vitae into a one-page board-focused biography aimed at board nominating committees, recruiters, and non-academicians.

“Creating a Board Resume: Case Study One,” is facilitated by Cynthia Vlasich, MBA, BSN, RN in conversation with Victoria Maisonneuve, the Director, Nursing Center of Excellence & Magnet at Parkview Health. This case study outlines the step-by-step process of creating a board resume, and offers tips for researching and identifying the right board to join.

“Board Resume and Beyond: Case Study Two,” also facilitated by Cynthia Vlasich, this time in conversation with Kelly Edmondson, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, the Chief Nursing Officer at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital. This second case study continues the discussion about the board resume, and how to find the right board for you.

“Talk the Talk: Understanding & Speaking Finance-ese,” facilitated by Terry Pope, MSN, RN, the Executive Director of the Mid-Ohio District Nurses Association. This webinar offers an overview of terms and tools that document the financial health of an organization, and provides an initial tutorial for reading and interpreting financial documents.

A series like this would normally cost $250, but thanks in part to the generosity of the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation, you can access this content completely free of charge. To get started, visit the Nurses on Boards Webinar Series page at and follow the instructions for signing up.

This article is part of our ongoing partnership with the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC), formed to improve the nation’s health through the service of nurses on boards, commissions, and other decision-making entities. They want at least 10,000 board seats in 2020. Scrubs Magazine is committed to helping NOBC meet this goal by informing, educating, and inspiring nurses and nursing students to take on leadership roles at all levels.
