A nurse and manger of The Village Clinic in Chiloquin, Ore., and a volunteer advanced life support provider for a local ambulance service, Lynne Matuk, RN, gave antibiotic shots to an elderly patient at home daily for two weeks – to help him avoid the hospital. When an influenza vaccine shortage loomed, she scrutinized hundreds of clinic records to identify high-risk patients to ensure they were inoculated and drove two hours to vaccinate distant, homebound patients who could not reach the rural clinic. She entered the profession as a CNA, became an LPN, an RN, and is pursuing an FNP certification.
