Florence Nightingale is rightfully known as the founder of modern nursing, doing much to advance the profession during the 19th century and into the early part of the 20th century. We remember her today for many reasons—and now we can hear the sound of her voice.
Yes, “The Lady with the Lamp” made a recording in 1890 to raise money for the impoverished veterans of the Charge of Light Brigade, according to The Public Domain Review. It’s pretty incredible to hear the voice of someone who did so much for the nursing profession. Check it out in the video below.
Here is a transcription of her recording:
“When I am no longer even a memory, just a name, I hope my voice may perpetuate the great work of my life. God bless my dear old comrades of Balaclava and bring them safe to shore. Florence Nightingale.”
