Life after nursing school

I totally had this whole idea of what life would be like after nursing school.  After spending a few days catching up on sleep, I’d wake up refreshed every morning at 7:00. Feeling chipper and full of energy, I would head out for a morning walk around the neighborhood, enjoying the beautiful summer morning air. After about 3 miles, I’d come home to a hot pot of coffee and a healthy breakfast…because, you know, now that school’s out I can finally eat healthy and get plenty of exercise. The rest of my day would be filled with some studying intermixed with a trip to the mall, or a day out with friends. I had these ideas of trips to visit friends and family, fishing days with my fiance, and time with family.
Somehow, somewhere, it all went wrong.  My NCLEX review class started the day after pinning…. and it was a slap in the face. I don’t know why I didn’t expect it to be so involved! It was like being in school all over again!! What happened to my summer vacation!?!  Why was I waking up groggy and tired, only to head over to Coffee Bean or Starbucks and spend the day reviewing every body system and answering question after question after question?  This was not in my plan.

While summer has had it’s moments, the idea of blissful days of relaxing and studying have floated off on another cloud. I’m trying to take it day by day and throw in some fun, it’s not the same craziness as when I was in school, but I think that until I get my boards over and done with, I’m not going to be able to get that full night’s sleep and wake up without a care in the world!

Ani Burr, RN

I'm a brand new, full-fledged, fresh-out-of-school RN! And better yet, I landed the job of my dreams working with children. I love what I do, and while everyday on the job is a new (and sometimes scary) experience, I'm taking it all in - absorbing everything I can about this amazing profession we all fell in love with.
