Last first day of nursing school

When I was a kid, the first day of school was seriously one of the most exciting days of the year. The air was still hot from the summer, but there was always a breezy excitement in the air. There’s a smell that I can’t quite pinpoint, I think it’s a mix of pink erasers and desk cleaner, sharpened pencils and new backpacks, that used to hit all my senses and made it that much more exciting.  So now even though it’s the start of spring, the heat has rolled in and that smell of erasers and school blowing lightly through the air ducts as I walked into the building on my last first day of school.
It sounds cheesy, but I actually got very nostalgic. That excitement came rushing back. And while I wasn’t opening up a new box of pens or crayons, I was pulling out the last set of syllabi of nursing school. That whole orientation process we go through on the first day of class, meeting instructors, getting anxious about the workload ahead, and figuring out the next ten weeks of my life have all come down to this week. From this point on it’s officially the last count down.

There are only 9 weeks left, and that count down doesn’t start over again. This is it, Nursing School. The end of the road. Or, in a quote from Semisonic that’s been splashed over graduations since it came out, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.” This is all just getting started. Best of luck to everyone this quarter, whether it’s your first or last – we’re all on this road together.

Any other nursing students have some thoughts about wrapping up school?

Ani Burr, RN

I'm a brand new, full-fledged, fresh-out-of-school RN! And better yet, I landed the job of my dreams working with children. I love what I do, and while everyday on the job is a new (and sometimes scary) experience, I'm taking it all in - absorbing everything I can about this amazing profession we all fell in love with.
