Kentucky nurses shave their heads to support cancer patients

WHAS11

Leslie Caughron and Karrie Walp, nurses at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, KY, shaved their heads last week for St. Baldrick’s, a foundation that funds cancer research. What inspired their bold move?

“I am doing this so people know we have to find a cure for cancer. We have to find a cure,” Walp told local news channel 11. Caughron had an even more personal reason–she cut off her hair to support her former patient, Aiden, who was just two when he was diagnosed.

“Aiden and I bonded immediately and Aiden’s just my boy,” Caughron said. “Aiden’s mom shaved her head a couple of years ago for St. Baldrick’s and when he relapsed this summer I decided I would shave my head for him.”

Aiden’s mom, Gena Johnson, was touched by the nurses’ actions. “It’s a very selfless act to be able to humble yourself to remove your hair to be like what they are,” Johnson said.

To add to the sweetness, the hair will be donated to Locks of Love. The team is hoping to raise more than $12,000 for St. Baldrick’s.

Have any nurses at your hospital taken similar actions? Would you shave your head in support of a patient? Let us know in the comments below!
