Interactive Nursing school hailed as one of the finest in the nation

The new Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing building at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas opened Jan. 24, 2010.  The $13 million, 41,000 square foot building features an interactive simulation lab that resembles a modern hospital, complete with ambulance bay, emergency room and intensive care unit.
Three 3G mannequins — with more to come — provide realistic patient care interactions.  The mannequins can be programmed to exhibit a variety of physical ailments and “respond” based on students’ nursing care.

The new building also includes a 104-seat classroom with computer-enabled desks; the old nursing classrooms could only handle about 55 students at a time.  Donor Lucille DeWitt and the School of Nursing hope the state-of-the-art building will attract and educate students to ease Texas’ severe nursing shortage.
