The new Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing building at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas opened Jan. 24, 2010. The $13 million, 41,000 square foot building features an interactive simulation lab that resembles a modern hospital, complete with ambulance bay, emergency room and intensive care unit.Â
Three 3G mannequins — with more to come — provide realistic patient care interactions. The mannequins can be programmed to exhibit a variety of physical ailments and “respond” based on students’ nursing care.
The new building also includes a 104-seat classroom with computer-enabled desks; the old nursing classrooms could only handle about 55 students at a time. Donor Lucille DeWitt and the School of Nursing hope the state-of-the-art building will attract and educate students to ease Texas’ severe nursing shortage.
