Early Detection Saves Lives
As with many diseases, there are screenings and tests to detect prostate cancer in its earliest stages. If prostate cancer is caught early on, men are more likely to be able to take full advantage of various treatment options that could save their lives. However, it’s important to note that some tests come with risks, and they aren’t always accurate. For example, prostate-specific antigen blood tests aren’t totally accurate and sometimes results in unnecessary treatments. That said, if you’re over the age of 50 and are concerned about developing prostate cancer, a discussion with your healthcare professional might be in order. During the discussion, you can ask about the pros and cons of screening so you can make an informed decision about your health.
Typically, men who agree to health screenings are tested once every year or two. During the tests, doctors will look out for signs of the disease, such as elevated PSA levels. Elevated PSA levels can be a sign of either prostate cancer or other non-cancerous conditions, all of which would still benefit from medical attention. Some tests are also effective at distinguishing aggressive prostate cancer from less aggressive forms, which would be good information to know when mapping out a treatment plan.
Whether men decide to get screened, it’s always important to stay on top of their health and take steps to decrease their chance of getting the disease. By eating well, maintaining a healthy weight, and not smoking, men can decrease their risk of prostate cancer, as well as other types of cancer.
