4. Edith Cavell, a nurse to all people during war torn Europe, was a dedicated nurse who helped pioneer modern nursing in Belgium, playing a major role in nursing education and helping to publish the first professional nursing journal in Belgium. She became known worldwide for her humanitarian efforts during the First World War, harboring Allied soldiers and aiding their escape from German forces.  She was later executed for her involvement. Her bravery and compassion has inspired monuments, schools, streets and memorials to be erected and named in her honor throughout the world.  She was known to have stated, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved” – a sentiment which perfectly defines the heart of a true nurse.
