3. There are nurses who have captured our imagination, and then there are nurses whose imaginations have captured us. Walt Whitman, one of America’s most important poets was also a nurse in army hospitals during the Civil War while his brother, George, fought on the battlefields. Whitman was influenced by his experiences to write “The Great Army of the Sick” which was published in 1863. His accounts were later republished as Memoranda During the War.
