Dr. Payam Toobian Discusses What to Expect at a Neurology Consultation

Neurologist and physician Dr. Payam Toobian recently discussed what to expect at a neurology consultation.

Neurologists like Dr. Payam Toobian prefer to prepare patients for what they can expect at their consultation. Many patients enter these consultations feeling nervous or afraid that the neurologist will diagnose them with a disease that could be life-altering. However, Dr. Toobian and other specialists agree that understanding what will occur at consultation can ease many fears.

About the Exam

A neurological exam can take many forms. A qualified neurologist will perform the exam, but they do not perform surgery. A qualified neurosurgeon like Dr. Payam Toobian performs surgery to treat neurological disorders and other issues.

Typically, it involves a physical examination focusing on the nerves and brain. The doctor may check a person’s speech, vision, coordination, reflexes, muscle strength, and more. They will also ask the patient about symptoms and medical history.

A qualified neurologist may understand the patient’s diagnosis from the above exam alone. However, they will likely perform tests to confirm the diagnosis. They may take blood or urine tests to look for toxins, proteins, or infections. Other tests include imaging tests of the spine and brain, electroencephalography, an electromyogram, evoked potentials, a biopsy, a spinal tap, and others.

The neurologist can help ease concerns regarding the tests by informing the patient of what they entail and whether or not they cause pain.

Preparing for a Neurological Consultation

A patient can prepare for a neurological consultation by taking several steps to ensure the neurologist has all of the information they need. Writing down symptoms, medications, allergies, and previous illnesses can ensure the patient doesn’t forget any essential information in the meeting. Neurologists also recommend making a list of questions to ask the doctor.

A neurological consultation often involves the patient receiving a lot of information at once, which can be overwhelming. Doctors recommend patients bring a friend or family member with them as an extra set of ears. They may also want to bring supplies to take notes.

Neurologists emphasize the importance of not being afraid to ask questions. Patients who feel confused but don’t ask questions may misunderstand the diagnosis and view it as more or less severe than it is. It is essential the patient leaves the office with a clear understanding of the diagnosis, and the next steps they need to take.
