Ever wished you could use your cell phone to give a patient a sonogram? Okay, maybe not…but that may be the wave of the future for healthcare!

Dr. Eric Topol is the director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, chief academic officer of San Diego-based Scripps Health and one of GQ’s 2009 “Rock Stars of Science.” He recently appeared on NBC’s Rock Center to talk with Dr. Nancy Snyderman about how your cell phone has the potential to become:

  • a sonogram
  • an EKG
  • a glucose meter
  • used for serum and urology analysis
  • a damage indicator for artery linings when used in conjunction with nano sensors

The potential of wireless and mobile health technology has become a popular topic lately, but Topol doesn’t stop there. In the video below, he also discusses how 1/3 of prescription medications are not effective, mass screenings waste money and (we think you’ll like this one) how patients need to take ownership of their own health.

Check out the full segment here:

What do you think of Topol’s message? Have you heard about or read about him before? What innovations would help your day-to-day working life? Let us know in the comments.
