Each year it is estimated that over 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,500 will die. 3. Women who avidly smoke and drink are at a greater chance for breast cancer. 4. Self-checks are super important! Use light pressure to check for lumps near the surface, and firm pressure to explore deeper tissue. Any time you find a new or unusual lump in your breast, have your doctor check it. . . Running on adrenaline x ?! The day I never thought would come CAME! ??Here’s why: Last night my unit was understaffed so they decided to ✂️ my umbilical cord and end my orientation early. ? For the 1st time ever, I held my own TEAM of 11 very complex Geri-Psych pt’s (aside from all their psych issues we had foleys, CO 1:1, hoyer lifts, floated staff, sundowning, you name it). When the charge nurse told me “this is your moment to shine!” it truly hit me, the responsibility over these pt’s was all mine. I felt like I put on a new coat last night bc not only was I EXTRA cautious about everything, but I was super attentive to things I didn’t even think about while I was “still on orientation”. For the first time ever, I felt like a real nurse, and that’s when it hit me, I AM! As busy as it got last night, I loved every minute of it and every task I was presented with reminded me of my purpose. I wanted MY patients to receive the best care. This whole experience made me realize that we will never feel ready to put on the shoes of greater responsibility, but that is the only way to move forward. So whether you need a little self-pep talk or reassurance from someone else, allow yourself to put aside some of those insecurities you still hold to bc of your past. And remember, you got this!
