The CDC advisory panel voted in favor of children ages 5 to 11 receiving Pfizer COVID-19 shots. A final decision from the agency is expected within hours, which would set off another robust vaccination effort across the nation.
The FDA already has approved the vaccine for children with small doses — just a third of the amount given to teens and adults.
The panel ruled that all children aged 5-11 should be eligible for Pfizer’s vaccines.
If the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, signs off on a COVID-19 vaccine for kids in this age group, it will be the first time they will have access to protection from the deadly virus.
Now that the panel has weighed in, shots could begin in the coming week. Pfizer has already shipped millions of doses to states and pharmacies to be ready for the agency’s final decision.
