After threatening to strike at 39 healthcare facilities in California and Nevada, the California Nurses Association and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) have reached an agreement.
Over 16,000 nurses had threatened to strike, in part over concerns about H1N1 influenza protective measures. The nurses and CHW were also at odds over staffing levels, off-unit floating and proposed wage freezes.
The new agreement – reached Tuesday Nov. 4 but not yet ratified – addresses all of those concerns. It includes education and training regarding H1N1, as well as the use of personal protective equipment, including respirator masks. Nurses will also be part of the system-wide Pandemic Task Force and will receive 20% wage increases over a period of four years.
