Consider traveling between Thanksgiving and Christmas
One little-known fact is that the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are “low tide” for traveling. The timing makes sense considering most families gather at either or both holidays; they don’t have the time (or money!) to travel in between. So if you’re scheduled to work the holidays, why not take your holiday in between?
One note: If you decide to venture out during this period, make sure you’re headed back before December 23, when prices return to their spike.
What about a New Year’s trip?
Just as people tend not to travel between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the first two or three weeks in January are also slow for traveling. “The first two weeks of January should be high season, but no one takes winter vacation during that time,” says Weiner. “It’s officially high-season prices, but hotels will give really good deals.”
Why is it cheaper to travel then? People are either recovering from the holidays or trying to pay off holiday bills. Children are also back at school, meaning family life returns to its usual routine. As a nurse, it may be easier to get this time off due to the fact that coworkers have already vacationed or may want to work extra shifts to pay off those credit card bills!
If you do have children and would like to go away with them, remember that many schools don’t start right after New Year’s.
