Allie Rae, a former ICU nurse in the Boston area, recently traded in her medical scrubs for an OnlyFans account, where she regularly uploads risqué photos and videos of herself on the internet. She got the idea after she started showing off her bikini-ready body on Instagram, but things quickly became not safe for work (NSFW).
Today, she says she’s making $200K a month off her thousands of subscribers.
A Secret Hobby
Rae says she was used to working 14-hour shifts throughout the pandemic. It was the stress of working with COVID-19 patients that ultimately pushed her to pursue a new hobby outside of work.
She started posting photos of herself in a bikini on Instagram, but she quickly received direct messages from her fans asking her to take it to the next level – full nudity.
“I posted like two photos and I had people sign up for probably two weeks without me even posting anything, just anxiously awaiting my posts,” Rae said.
Before long, the money started pouring in.
“After that first month, month and a half, we easily cleared $8,000, it was kind of crazy. As a nurse I was making six, maybe seven grand a month, so it was real money.” Rae recounted.
To protect her identity outside of work, Rae never mentioned her facility or even her legal name online, but that didn’t stop some of her colleagues from hunting her down on the internet.
She says “roughly six” people in the ICU stumbled upon some of her milder photos in late 2020.
“(They) really went out of their way to make it a problem for me,” she said of the experience.
Things took a turn for the worst when her colleagues forwarded screenshots of her NSFW posts to the hospital’s managerial staff.
“This was, in my opinion, very ‘Mean Girls,’” Rae added.
She says her managers issued her an ultimatum: Quit OnlyFans or resign from your job as a nurse. Needless to say, she chose the latter.
“I was a very respected nurse on my unit, I actually trained all our incoming nurses,” Rae said, adding that since going public, “countless nurses” and other health care workers have reached out in support and even to inquire how to start their own pages.
A New Line of Work
Several months after leaving the hospital, Rae says OnlyFans became her full-time job. Her husband, whom she married at age 18, helps her record the photos and videos at home. Today, they can expect to bring home around $200K a month.
“It is a full-time job…we work very hard, girls that are successful like this on OnlyFans, they are not just posting and then just going to dinner to party,” Rae said, adding that she puts in more hours now than she did as a nurse.
If you’re looking to build your own online following by creating a profile on OnlyFans, Rae has some advice.
“First and foremost, if you are in a relationship, you have to make sure you’re solid in your communication with your partner, that is key,” said Rae. “The last thing you want to do is start something and realize the partner wasn’t fully on board with it. My husband and I, luckily, we have a great relationship.”
She also says it’s important to come to terms with the fact that some of your friends, family, and colleagues may discover your secret.
“It is possible your stuff will be leaked, it is possible your family will come across this,” Rae said, adding that she had to talk to her own children, who are now 17 and 18, about what she now does for a living. “They were prepared at least for that.”
In addition to enjoying her new line of work, Rae says she mainly uses the money to pay off her student loans. She’s also in the process of finding a new tax person, considering she and her husband are now in a higher tax bracket.
Rae, who is also a veteran, says she’s also looking into starting a podcast or coaching service for those that want to get into the business.
“I am an educated woman, a wife, a mother, I’m still very loyal to my husband, I’m a very good mom. I think there is a stigma out there that that’s not what you see on OnlyFans,” she said. “There are a lot of us out there and I would really love to make an impact on that. It has been a really crazy ride.”
