9. RNs can now prescribe birth control in California

Registered nurses in California will now be able to write prescriptions for birth control.

On September 22, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed law AB2348, allowing RNs to dispense the pill, rings and patches, according to an Associated Press report on ABC News.

Our Facebook fans weigh in:

“Prescribing is a physician’s job. The first nurse who gets sued over this will be ridiculed by physicians. I believe it will be a step backward.”
—Cheryl Slay Bedard

“I think it’s fantastic. Nurses ARE good for more than starting IVs and bringing bedpans. Without having seen the actual wording of the law, I’m going to assume that it’s done under specific circumstances and with guidelines in place. It’s not as if RNs are going to be walking down the street handing out scrips.”
—Donna Rueden
