A new research study conducted by Baylor College of Medicine compared vigilance levels before and after a 12 hour shift between ICU nurses and floor nurses. Sleep quality among ICU nurses and floor nurses were also assessed. The results showed an increase in errors before and after shift only for ICU nurses.
Researchers say these findings may have implications for patient safety standards.
