Retired after 42 years of nursing, Margaret “Peggy” Hurley, RN, still accepts shifts at Southeast Georgia Health Systems’ Camden Campus, in Saint Mary’s Ga. When a full-time ER nurse was diagnosed with breast cancer, Hurley covered all of her colleague’s shifts for nearly half a year, which included three weekly 12-hour shifts, weekends and holidays. Hurley, like her co-worker who has since returned to work, is a breast cancer survivor. She volunteers for the American Cancer Society and provides emotional support to others who have been diagnosed with the disease.
