The Triad Group, Inc., a medical equipment manufacturer based in Hartland, Wis., recently recalled hundreds of millions of alcohol swabs, wipes and pads commonly used in hospitals and homes throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
The recall was sparked after doctors at The Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Colo. traced a number of cases of bloodstream infections in children caused by the Bacillus cereus bacteria back to contaminated alcohol swabs manufactured by the Triad company.
A resulting investigation by the Food and Drug Administration has led to a voluntary recall of nearly a million cases of products by Triad, sold to hospitals as well as under the store brand names of Safeway, Kroger, Walgreens and CVS, among others.
While the FDA investigation is ongoing, no legal action has been taken against the company.
