Can National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month Really Make a Difference?
Yes, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month really can make a difference in the lives of our children. Not only is it a time to raise awareness about the problem, but it’s also a time for healthcare providers to educate families on how to help their children live healthier, more active lives. Some fun ideas to get children up and moving include the following:
- Start small by making subtle changes to meal and snack times. For example, keep fresh fruit and vegetables within reach.
- Start incorporating after dinner walks into the daily routine.
- Encourage schools to keep recess. Unfortunately, many schools are either getting rid of or shrinking recess for students.
- Limit screen time at home to two or fewer hours a day. Instead, encourage children to play outside.
- Make mealtime fun by trying new, healthy recipes. Let children help with meal prep and educate them on the importance of eating a well-balanced diet.
- Monkey see, monkey do. Oftentimes, children are more likely to eat what they see their parents eating. Set a good example by eating well.
