5 Ways You Can Design Your Home on a Budget

How to Save Money on Your Next Interior Design Project

If you’re in the process of redesigning the look of your home, you don’t have to spend a fortune on costly designer fees and overpriced furniture. There are lots of ways to cut corners and save money, while still bringing your interior design dreams to life. You might have to adjust your design strategy if you’re looking to save as much money as possible, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on quality and style. Learn how to design a home on a budget by shopping second-hand, mixing different styles, and choosing ready-made furniture sets. We sat down with David Diehl, who owns D3 Home Modern Furniture a modern furniture in San Diego company, to get his advice for nurses.

Stay Flexible with Mixed Colors and Designs

Sticking to a particular color scheme or style might force you to pay more for furniture and accessories. Instead, try being flexible with your design plans and mix different styles and colors together. This can be a great opportunity to experiment as you combine some truly dissimilar items in the same room. But mixing it up gives you more options when browsing through a furniture store. You won’t be limited to a certain theme or pattern, helping you find the lowest price every time.

Choose Ready-Made Products and Furniture

Custom-made furniture will almost always be more expensive than ready-made pieces. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for second fiddle. You can find some truly stunning furniture sets and individual pieces at trendy furniture stores and thrift stores. If you want to adjust the look of a piece or customize it in some way, you might want to learn a new skill like woodworking or sewing to cut down on your design costs.

Refinish Existing Pieces

You can save money by refurbishing older items instead of buying new. If you want to hold onto a couple of existing items in your collection, try adding a new finish or a new coat of paint to help them shine. Some of these pieces can truly stand out if you’re willing to spend a few bucks to touch up the surface. You can also upholster old sofas and chairs or repurpose older items by using them in nontraditional ways.

Accessorize with Thrift Stores

Thrift stores can be a gold mine when it comes to interior design. Finding a quality furniture set at a thrift store might be a struggle, but you can certainly supplement existing pieces with inexpensive lamps shades, wall hangings, vintage art, lighting fixtures and other unique objects that you can find at a thrift store. It also gives your home a more lived-in quality instead of buying everything brand new.

Use Multi-Purpose Furniture

Sometimes less is more if you can use a piece of furniture in more ways than one. You can find chairs and sofas that double as end tables. Or you can find ottomans and tables that come with built-in storage. If your furniture needs to be stylish as well as practical, you can try killing two birds with one stone by using multi-purpose furniture. You’ll be amazed at how much money you can save if you start combining items on your shopping list.

Designing a home doesn’t have to be a major expense. Get creative with your interior design plans and try thinking outside the box. You don’t have to recreate all those high-end images you see in design magazines. Mix it up and create your own trends by pairing different styles, shopping at different locations, and upgrading your existing pieces.
