5 Ways To Keep Your Children’s Eyes Healthy

0

3. Use Protective Gears

Eye injuries are the most common cause of vision loss in children. According to the National Eye Health Education Program, there are more than 42,000 sports-related eye injuries every year, and in most cases, children are the victims.

Although eye injuries are common among children, they are easily preventable. Make sure that your kid wears protective glasses when participating in sports or dangerous recreational activities.

Another great way to protect your children’s vision is to ensure that they are wearing sunglasses on sunny days or special weather conditions, such as blinding water reflection or snow glare. Look for sunglasses that block all UV light and come with a headband so that your kid can play without being annoyed or losing his sunglasses.

4. Limited TV Time

It’s convenient to leave your kids in front of the TV for hours and go about your chores. But, this habit can damage your children’s vision and lead to various problems. The constant flickering light that TVs and computer screens produce can be damaging to kid’s eye and affect proper vision development. As a rule of thumb, your kids shouldn’t watch more than one hour of TV per day.

5. Include Nutritious Food in Their Diets

Just like us, children tend to prefer foods that are high in sugar, fat, and salt. But, unlike us, they don’t understand why these foods are bad for them and are ready to cry their eyes out to get what they want. Anyone raising a child knows how difficult it can be to include healthy food groups in their diets. But, although the idea of letting your kids go on an all-candy diet is certainly appealing, the effort of ensuring they get proper nutrition is worth it.

Macular degeneration, for instance, a very common, age-related visual disease, can be combated by foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, such as leafy greens, egg yolks, and corn. Salmon, mackerel, tuna, trout, and anchovies, which contain fatty acids, are also good for the development of the retina and should be included in your kid’s diet.

Take care of your kid’s vision by scheduling regular eye exams and taking safety measures that ensure their eyes are protected.
