4-Year-Old Leukemia Patient ‘Marries’ Her Favorite Nurse
Abby, a 4-year-old girl, was diagnosed with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She was receiving cancer treatment at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers in Albany, New York, when she “fell in love” with her favorite nurse, Matt Hickling. Abby began telling everybody that she wanted to marry Nurse Hickling, so Matt and the staff of the pediatric oncology center decided to make Abby’s day and plan a surprise wedding.
The hospital thoughtfully organized the surprise ceremony in less than 24 hours, making sure Abby’s dream wedding was complete with flowers, cake, bridesmaids, and her very own beautiful wedding dress. Hickling waited appropriately wearing a tuxedo T-shirt as Abby walked into the room atop a path of pink rose petals.
Abby’s smiling family and nurses gathered around taking photos and videos as the happy bride blushed behind her paper mask and ran up to hug her favorite nurse. Hickling removed Abby’s mask, revealing her adorable smile as she innocently asked him: “Will you marry me?” “Of course I’ll marry you,” Hickling joyfully replied, causing Abby to hug him, smile, and say, “This is the best day ever!” For a precious moment, Abby was able to forget about fighting for her life against leukemia and enjoy the love and compassion that makes life worth living.
